A Yurt To Call Home

A strange word, yurt; but a product that has been around for ages.  Wikipedia describes a yurt as a portable, felt-covered dwelling structure that features wood lattice sides.  This type of structure was traditionally used by nomads in the grassland plains of Central Asia.  This type of structure worked perfectly for the travelling tribes, as they were designed to be portable.  Similar in some ways to a tent, a yurt is home-like and features thicker walls than a tent.

Although originating in a faraway place from where they are used today, this ancient dwelling structure has a lot of benefit in today's society as well.  Used in various countries at this point in time, yurts fill a variety of purposes.  Some people live full-time in them; while others use them for school rooms or personal yoga and meditation studios.  Some state parks in Canada even have them set up for camping.

Why would you want to call a yurt home?  That's the real question here.  Luckily, the answer is very simple.  Today, a yurt is essentially a round house; and a round house comes with huge benefits that range from cost effectiveness to the overall aura of the home you reside in.  Economically friendly and environmentally friendly, a round house meets more needs than you may initially think.

Built with high quality materials, today's round house structures typically fall into the category of prefab home.  Now, owning a prefab home in no way indicates that the home is not built extremely well.  In fact, these homes are highly desirable and surprisingly easy to maintain in terms of heating and cooling.  This is specific to the round house, because the smaller square footage of exterior walls results in less heat loss.

The beauty of a prefab home that is the round house is that you get the have a hand in the design of your home.  This type of home is not for everyone, of course.  But with the state of the economy being such that home ownership is not as easy as it once was, a prefab home can make a very nice alternative to a stick built house.

Aside from the affordability offered by this sort of dwelling, there is the amazing feeling that one gets when they drive up to their truly unique home that displays their personal sense of style.  Round houses are unique and certainly stand out from cookie cutter tract homes that take up room in every major city.  With a round house, you connect with nature and you take an active roll in the design process as well.

If you want to experience a naturally beautiful living area, then you may be a great candidate for a round house.  This type of home is roomy and earthy in the way that light flows in and the overall design lets more nature in to comfort you during times when you are home.   Yes, a yurt to call home began centuries ago; but the idea is still the same today and the product therefore thrives in the modern world.

Description

This book shows around 25 international houses that are based on modular and prefabrication systems. All of them have ecological advantages in comparison to standard construction systems, since they represent a more effective use of resources and a reduction of construction time and there with costs. All houses are built in factories, carried by road and assembled on site. Thus, building materials can be used more economically and very few refuse is produced during construction. Due to the actual spread of technologies and construction typologies, the international prefabrication industry can deliver up-to-date houses, aesthetically modern, and with an average rank of prizes from very cheap solutions to more exclusive ones, depending on the main material used (wood, steel, galvanised aluminum and concrete).

Description

As the world's population swells and the need for sustainable ways of living grows ever more urgent and obvious, prefabricated architecture has taken center stage. Even before our current predicaments, the mass-produced, factory-made home had a distinguished history, having served as a vital precept in the development of Modern architecture. Today, with the digital revolution reorganizing the relationship between drafting board and factory, it continues to spur innovative manufacturing and design, and its potential has clearly not yet come to fruition. Home Delivery traces the history of prefabrication in architecture, from its early roots in colonial cottages though the work of such figures as Jean Prouve and Buckminster Fuller, and mass-produced variants such as the Lustron house, to a group of full-scale contemporary houses commissioned specifically for the MoMA exhibition that this book accompanies. In addition to an introductory essay by Barry Bergdoll, Chief Curator in the Museum's Department of Architecture and Design, this volume contains essays on prefabricated housing in Japan and in Nordic countries by Ken Tadashi Oshima and Rasmus Waern, respectively. It also includes focused texts on approximately 40 historical projects and five commissions, as well as a bibliography.
