Log cabins

Log cabins are growing rapidly in popularity. Log Cabins are both functional and environmentally friendly, and as an extra benefit add value to your property. It is important that you buy your log cabin from an experienced and established supplier. Try to avoid the companies who only sell their log cabins online. If possible choose a log cabin supplier who has a site where their log cabins are on display and can be viewed at your leisure. The more Cabins they have on display the better as you will be able to judge what type of cabin will best suit your individual needs and requirements.

Log Cabins can be used a large variety of purposes. Varying from garden home office, retreats, workshops, summerhouses, garages, sports pavilions, ‘granny flat' or annex, hobby room, children's playrooms, chalets and almost any type of garden building.

The sturdy and robust build quality of a log cabin lends itself to all year round use, and for this reason, plus the flexibility of design options available, the utilisation of log cabins as a home office as rocketed in the last 10 years. This trend has also been boosted by the increasing numbers of people and small businesses who wish to work this way, with all the associated benefits of low overheads and the eradication of time consuming and frustrating commuting issues.

By choosing to buy your log cabin from an established and reputable supplier who has a display site you will be able to take advantage of their knowledge and expertise. Internet only suppliers will not be able to give you this personal and one to one service. After all, your log cabin is likely to be a serious investment, on a par with similar home improvements such as having a conservatory or extension built on your property. You would not dream of buying a conservatory or extension online, as if it were a CD or a pair of shoes. So make sure you seek out log cabin supplier who has a bricks and mortar based business.

They will be able to sit down with you and help you with issues such as: Planning – you will need to be sure of the planning laws regarding having your log cabin. There are laws regarding how close to a boundary it can be and the overall height of the cabin. Siting: your log cabin needs to be placed in the best possible position...it can't be moved once it's erected, so good advice on this subject is a must. Design: Log Cabins come in many shapes and sizes, both in terms of the outside and also the interior, which may be split into several rooms. The ideal scenario is to have professional drawings made up, which are designed in consultation with a specialist draughtsman. This way the windows and doors are positioned where you want them along with internal walls and internal door openings according to your specification and personal taste.

Log Cabins by Creative Living Cabins meet all the above criteria. They have one of the UK's largest log cabin display villages, with cabins available to view and walk around in. in addition, many have fully fitted interiors, which serve to show how the cabin area can be best utilized. Creative Living supply the highest quality log cabins available in the UK today, built using only top class Siberian Spruce sourced from sustainable forests. The log cabins are constructed using an interlocking plank system. This method is far superior in every aspect to the conventional panel options offered by many other manufacturers. Also, we employ a double tongue and grooved air lock system that is a natural barrier to the elements. This feature is available on all our cabins that have a 35mm wall or above.

Your log cabin needs to be installed and erected by specialists who work in this trade. Be careful to avoid cabin suppliers who farm out their installation to sub contractors. The cabin needs to be built on a special base, carefully leveled and prepared. Creative Living Cabins use their own installation teams, who have the all important experience and know how to make sure your cabin looks as good as the one you saw in the display village.

Description

As reviewed by Kirkus Discoveries: 'Step-by-step instructions on how to build a home in an economical and artistically unique way. Owning a home doesn't have to be a trying ordeal, says Madison, who reports that he built his own house with little more than his own muscle power and ingenuity. Though he claims not to be particularly handy, he managed to create a fully functional cabin complete with electricity, running water and Internet access as part of a journey that was both fulfilling and therapeutic. He takes readers through the process, from cutting down trees and laying the foundation for the floor to installing piping and electricity to detailing plans to build additional modules. Pictures and diagrams complement the text, and the author even discusses his future plans to fully automate the cabin. In addition to the down-and-dirty details, he uses quotes from a number of philosophers-Aristotle, Locke, Rousseau and others-to help explain his motivation. It was as much about testing his own abilities as it was about creating a physical shelter. One one level, this is a practical guide that contains pertinent information for people who actually want to build their own cabin. On another, it's a fascinating look inside the mind of a man who chose to go against the grain and who writes with such folksy charm and comical practicality that you can't help but applaud him for bucking the system. Those not interested in building their own homes will be bored senseless by the technical details and some of the long-winded endnotes, but entertaining anecdotes-such as how the author munches on blackberries while simultaneously trimming his beard in his yard to lay down a barrier of human scent that deters snakes-keep the pages turning. In definite need of editorial direction but makes a case for the author-whatever his name is-getting his own home-improvement show.' As reviewed by New York Times best selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh: 'When Henry David Thoreau tired of the city in 1845, he retreated to the country, living on the shores of Walden Pond and chronicling his experiences in the timeless work Walden or Life in the Woods. Now, in an enchanting new book, A Small Cabin that One Person can Build, readers are presented with a sort of modern-day version of Thoreau's classic. Like Thoreau, author Aristotle Locke Rousseau Hume Madison (a.k.a. Al Madison) decided to retreat from his hectic life, and although he didn't have a place to live, he had some time and money and, more importantly, some land and trees. In this amazing little book, Madison (each of the illustrations names he uses provides a famous quote at the end of it) sets out to build a log cabin-and educate readers on how to do it themselves. In a friendly, approachable style, Madison shows readers exactly how he built his cabin using easy to follow step-by-step instructions, from insulation to wiring to putting on a porch. He lists exactly what tools you need and where to get them. Lest the thought of roughing it doesn't appeal to you, be assured that this cabin is no rustic refuge. Madison added all the modern comforts, including Internet service and a flush toilet. 'There are two characteristics to my building,' he writes 'It was built efficiently and it is a deliberate work of art.' Filled with wonderful photographs and a fine, wry wit, Madison's book is not just a how-to, it's a why-to. Because Madison didn't just build a cabin; he rebuilt himself. As he takes the time to point out, his labors made him healthier, stronger, and emotionally tougher, too. Readers can live vicariously through Madison in this wise and funny book, but truthfully, after reading it you'll want to build a cabin of your own. Luckily Madison is here to show you how.'

Description

With evocative text by Judith Miller and inspiring photographs by James Merrell, "Wooden Houses" explores the decorative potential of wood in our homes. Wooden houses range from Midwestern prairie clapboard houses with wraparound porches to wood-framed barns converted into airy living spaces. Wood has always played a part in consturction, architecture, and interior decoration and has long been valued for its practical benefits. Its insulating qualities, for example, made it an obvious choice for Scandinavian homes, and so the familiar log houses came into existence. But the vast decorative potential of wood has ensured its continued use, as evidenced by 19th-century houses with elaborately carved gables and bargeboards. Indoors, wood surrounds us in many ways. Structural elements such as oak-beamed and vaulted ceilings become features in their own right. Wood can also be used as further embellishement in the form of beautiful paneling or carved and turned banisters and staircases, and in original furniture designs. Whether it is left in its natural state to show the variety of grains and depths of colours, or used as a canvas for paint techniques, wood is a beautiful resource. *A celebration of the natural beauty of wood in decoration, interiors, and architecture. *Includes an introduction to the main architchtural styles

Description

The only step-by-step guide to building log cabins and log furniture—Pioneer style There are other manuals on building cabins, but W. Ben Hunt's is the only one to show you how to build and furnish an authentic pioneer cabin-the easy, natural way, using only hand tools and the woods around you. Our ancestors used logs and hand tools to build durable, dry, windproof, and protective dwellings; and they fashioned chairs, tables, branches, and bushes. In this day of power saws, lumberyards, and high prices, it's good to know that you can build in the same way. How to Build a Log Cabin Part One provides complete directions for building cabins of three sizes: one-room, one-room and lean-to, and three-room. Just follow the clear instructions on every step of construction from choosing the site, clearing the tract, and building the foundation to installing fixtures, heating, and lighting. How to Furnish a Log Cabin If you're not ready to build an entire cabin, you can try your hand at some of the small furnishings such as lamps, fences, and candlesticks. Part Two tells all you need to know to build and finish rustic furniture for an entire home: benches, tables, chairs, beds, cots, shelves, candelabras, gates, arbors, wayside stands, even road signs and birdhouses. "Two Books in One" There are really two books in one here: Building a Log Cabin, published in 1947, and Rustic Construction, published in 1939. These two classics have been reproduced exactly as they first appeared, with the drawings and photographs that W. Ben Hunt selected and produced for the original editions.
